Constant hangers are spring devices used to hold up pipes and equipment subject to thermal expansions.
They have a constant reaction along the whole range of vertical movement, hence the load on the application points remains equal despite substancial displacements.
They are employed when the vertical movement is significant and therefore the use of variable load supports would cause strains higher than the admissible values.
